Book Review: Brilliance!

Masterpieces of the American Jewelry Design Council

This is a rare and beautiful book filled with close-up photographs of jewelers' work on annual projects for the American Jewelry Design Council.  The images are gorgeous and awe-inspiring. Cindy Edelstein and Frank Stankus recount the various projects that the jewelers have tackled with wit and insight.

Starting with the Cube in 1992, the book covers the following design projects: Wheel, Key, Puzzle, Water, Flight, Peekaboo, Fold, Sphere, Pyramid, Secret Treasure, and the Spiral. Interpretations of the topics were clearly very subjective, as all art is. For jewelry lovers and designers alike, this makes a wonderful reference and coffee table book.

Sailing Moon, by George Sawyer
Here's an excerpt about CJDG member George Sawyer's gorgeous Sailing Moon on the topic of water.

At the other end of the inspiration specturm is George Sawyer, who deliberately set out to recapture a particular water-charged moment from his past. As a sailor who occasionally pilots racing sloops, George was at the helm of a boat one night on Lake Superior. The moon was full, the sky purple-black and the air like velvet on his skin. The ship knifed through the water at a 40 degree tilt. For a sailor like George, that moment embodied the perfection of sailing. How could he evoke that experience in a work of art?

There are a number of CJDG members who are also AJDC members. Here's the current list:

Mark Schneider
Cornelis Hollander
Michael Good
Pascal Lacroix
Barbara Heinrich
Todd Reed
George Sawyer
