Margery Hirschey's mother was an art teacher who knew the importance of exposing young minds to great art. And so from a young age, Ms. Hirschey was introduced to some of the greatest museums of the world. Much of her inspiration comes from the elegance and simplicity of the ancient artifacts she saw, particularly simple day to day objects. Ms. Hirschey finds the imperfection of early metal work to be very beautiful and organic, being a natural result of the human hand.
Using centuries old techniques, Ms. Hirschey uses 100 percent recycled 18k and 22k gold for its intense color and luster, paired with precious and semi precious stones hand-picked for their subtle colorations and natural inclusions to create unique, one of a kind pieces. She believes the imperfect stones have more character than modern "flawless" gems and are more beautiful because of their imperfections.
While inspired by ancient jewelry and the history behind these pieces, she does not wish to simply recreate what has been done before, but to design jewelry that tells the story for today's woman. This jewelry is designed for women with a strong sense of individuality, style and understated elegance. Hopefully, these are pieces that will, over time, become entwined with the wearer's identity and tell her story.
Ms. Hirschey received a B.A. in Fine Arts from Indiana University at Bloomington, studying painting, printmaking, drawing, sculpture and metal work. She has also studied garment construction, including tailoring and couture dressmaking with the late couturier, Charles Kliebacher. She studied the art of jewelry construction at Clear Creek Academy of Jewelry and Metal Arts in Denver, CO.
In 2004, she took her first jewelry class and three years later sold a pair of earrings at a local jewelry store. In 2007, her first pieces caught the eye of Bergdorf Goodman's Designer Jewelry buyer who encouraged her to create a full line. With virtually no experience in the business and in a makeshift studio, Ms. Hirschey created a stunning and sophisticated collection which debuted at a trunk show in the Designer Jewelry Salon at Bergdorf's in Fall, 2008. Since that time the line has grown and is now sold at fine stores across the United States.
